The runway takes up such a large proportion of the land on Fongafale Island, and it is an international airport like no other, that it is worth its own page on this website.

There is no fence around the runway or terminal, and it is common to see sports teams using the space for training or matches.  (That said, I saw people next to the runway, but not so much on it.)  I even heard that as the runway catches a breeze at night, people might take their mattresses out there to get a cooler night’s sleep!  There are only two scheduled flights each week, and no flights after dark, so why not make the best use of the space available!

When a flight arrives, the fire truck runs up and down the road next to the runway with its siren on, to announce that it’s time to get out of the way.
